Our newest addition to Sea of Sounds!
Alex South (alexsouth.org) is a Glasgow-based musician and researcher inspired by the sounds of the more-than-human world, who creates and performs live music for clarinets and electronics, often in collaboration with other musicians, dancers, and poets. He aims to produce musical experiences that highlight the wonderful, varied, and startling sounds of other animals, and are underpinned by rigorous research into the structures of animal communication. Alex’s music has been performed at venues and festivals around the world, from remote Scottish islands to Australia, and featured in CBC documentary ‘The Musical Animal’.

Project Work

Ocean Sounds Team Meeting: Getting organized and making progress
As with any project, getting started is always the hardest. Who will do what, creating internal deadlines, establishing collaborations. Of course ideas and initial actions were already circling prior to this point but now is the time to make our efforts visible – so make sure to follow us on Social Media to access more and fun content!

Bootcamp : Session 7

Integrating art and science & production planning for public deliverables
What better way to improve than getting constructive criticism? During this session Ellyne met with the other PAIs, sharing updates and feedback. We shared our concept (exhibition, VR experience, and educational workshop) and were advised to make the art and science bridge visible through labels, QR codes, debriefs and capturing participant feedback of the event.

Bootcamp : Session 6

Understanding and measuring impact
The impact this project will have is defined by the difference it will make and is divided into six areas of impact, namely, “Scientific”, “Social”, “Artistic”, “Political”, “Economical”, and “Environmental”. An impact assessment was made including both formative (ongoing improvement) and summative (final outcomes) assessments. Ellyne with further coordinate with Giovanna (Ocean Sounds) and Antonella (PartArt4OW) on evaluation for the Sea of Sounds workshop

Bootcamp : Session 5

Scientific Communication and Environmental Advocacy
This session had a focus on
1. Storytelling: The use of narratives to engage or inform
2. Advocacy: Using communication to influence opinion or advance a cause
3. Communication strategy: Planning how to deliver our messages effectively

The European Climate Pact and Make Europe Blue campaign were also introduced and we drafted a pledge to connect these to our project. Something that was demanded and we already took with us from our pilot project – Us: Sea of Sounds – is to combine scientific grounding with artistic storytelling.

Bootcamp : Session 4

Keeping ourselves updated

Making sure everyone is on track and answer questions is important. Therefore this meeting with the PartArt collaboration focused on solving anything that might be unclear to continue our progress on developing our project.

Bootcamp : Session 3

Citizen Engagement and Participation
Emphasis is put on accessibility – creating safe, inclusive spaces and to remove participation barriers such as travel or accessibility issues. The team is reflecting on who may be excluded from the event and finding solutions on how to include them.

Bootcamp : Session 2

Communication, data and ethics in focus
During this session it’s made clear from the board that all projects must comply with GDPR. it’s also important, especially when working with minors, that consent protocols are prepared and that we ensure equality, diversity, and inclusion are integrated throughout the project.

Kick-off : Session 1

Mission Ocean goals, and project introductions
Ellyne, the Sea of Sounds project leader, met with the PartArt4OW collaboration with the focus of getting an overview of the projects involved, what’s expected from them and make sure they align with the EU Mission Ocean goals and the UN ocean Decade.
