A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of having @tomwaes and his incredible film crew join us on a field trip. Fortunately, we were joined by long-finned pilot whales, who made the day even more special. The guys got to experience these incredible animals first hand. They saw the pilot whales’ curious and playful nature, and they got to hear pilot whales’ amazing vocal repertoire. As a dolphin species, long-finned pilot whales are very vocal, having a vocal repertoire consisting of clicks and whistles. These are used for echolocation (clicks) and socialization (whistles). Hearing them live is a unique opportunity and a life changing event. However, it can be a struggle to hear pure pilot whale sounds, as noise pollution in the ocean over shadow the sounds of the whales, making it more difficult for the whales to communicate with one another. That is why, we as a organization, are trying to give the whales a voice, and to speak up about this huge problem that’s affecting all of the marine mammal species, not just long-finned pilot whales. Tom and his crew showed a great interest in this problem and good talks were had. What exactly this project is about, we can’t say yet. But what we can say, is that we give many thanks to Tom and his men for an incredible experience full of respect and interest for the ocean and the beings living in it.Support our mission: follow, like, comment, and share.
