On a recent field trip we were lucky to encounter a beluga (which is rare in Bodø area) AND a young humpback whale. We only got to see them due to the amazing work of our land observers. We therefore would like to give a big thank you to:- Anders Dannesboe Larsen- Henry GüthenkeAnd – Riccardo ComelliFor reaching out when they saw this incredible animals. Belugas do not have a dorsal fin, making them difficult to spot from the RIB. Luckily for us, we had a great team consisting of Ellyne and Riccardo, who guided us to the beluga. The young humpback whale, unfortunately, shows signs of confusion, by showcasing strange fluke behaviour. Additionally, we also saw it almost getting caught in a net between some buoys (video 4). This just further proves how important it is to be considerate of marine life and not to leave out nets. Please continue to reach out if you spot a marine mammal, it truly is a big help! The Marine Mammals field course is officially done! During the two weeks of field trips, the students got to use the knowledge they gained during the theoretical lectures of the course. They have learned how to: Use a hydrophone 📸 Take pictures for photo ID How to write down field work notes 🐋 How to behave around marine mammals in the wild To summarize: They have learned how to study marine mammals in the field!On the field trips we saw a lot of harbour porpoises and grey seals🦭 and to finish off the field course with a bang, on the last day we saw long-finned pilot whales!Thank you to Nord University and FBA for letting us have the course at the university.
