David Salamon
Bachelor’s student in Biology
Research Assistant, Skipper, Drone Pilot
David moved to Norway at the beginning of 2026, but he has been fascinated by biology and the sea since he was a child.
He has crossed the Atlantic several times on traditional sailing ships (tall ships) and has experience on vessels of every size, from small boats to 350-metre container ships in commercial shipping, sailing across all the world’s oceans. He is a skipper, a licensed drone pilot, an enthusiastic diver and a photographer.
David gained further experience through an internship at the Alfred Wegener Institute and through scientific whale-watching in the Azores, where he collected sighting data on cetaceans.
He started studying biology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and is now doing his Bachelor in Bodø. He met Heike through two university courses and has been part of Ocean Sounds with great enthusiasm ever since.
At Ocean Sounds, David skippers the boat and flies the drone during fieldwork. He also works with IT and ArcGIS and takes care of the day-to-day technical operations, fixing whatever breaks as long as he can do it himself without calling in the specialists.
Beyond the fieldwork, he supports photo-ID, acoustic analysis and further scientific projects, contributing wherever data needs to be processed, matched or interpreted.
